This is a tiny Little Webster Dictionary that belonged to my grandfather Sidney. It has a silver (though very tarnished) cover on it that says “Tiffany & Co. Sterling”. It had always been perched on his office desk, gleaming in the sunlight while he clicked away at his calculator, always the dutiful accountant.

This singular object embodied the wonderful intelligence and quirkiness of the man that he was, not to mention, a reminder of our shared love of language. It wasn’t until the dictionary was in my possession that I noticed that he had pasted his passport photo to the cover of it. There he was, smiling like I remembered him.

Today, I will devote my internet browsing time exclusively to unearthing everything I can learn about this object. I will let you know what I find!

Hello everyone! Welcome to The Curiosity Index; a place to expand on my love of objects in an attempt to learn from them. Every day I will post one object and throughout the day will post my findings on the history of that object. I hope for this blog to be a place where design and contemporary archaeology intersect. Enjoy!
